Youth ambassadors create solutions to tackle community issues

The City’s Community, Arts and Culture Development Department brought together 41 young people.

The City’s Community, Arts and Culture Development Department brought together 41 young people from Mitchell's Plain, Athlone, Khayelitsha, Valhalla Park, Elsies River, Kalksteenfontein, Westlake, Sea Winds, Grassy Park, Bonteheuwel, Bellville, Milnerton, Manenberg, Alicedale, Dunoon, Maitland, Ruyterwacht to create action plans addressing challenges in their communities.

Some of the issues the youth unpacked included unemployment, teenage pregnancy, entrepreneurial support, high rate of school drop outs, gangsterism and mental health.

‘The feedback and proposed solutions from the group of young people will be collated in a report and then shared with officials in those areas. They will then work with the young people to address the issues they have highlighted and together put action plans in place. Young people are aware of the issues in their communities and often have innovative ideas of how to tackle them. We want it to be more than just a talk shop and hope to implement some of the solutions they have brought forth,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
